Abstract

MARC is a format that enables the bibliographic records to be read and processed by computer and therefore has been the most common means for communication of bibliographic information for more than a quarter of a century. Since the introduction of MARC in late 1960s, various MARC formats have emerged due to different bibliographic circumstances that have their impacts on MARCs. Some countries have developed their your national MARC formats based on UNIMARC (UNIversal MARC), an international MARC format. Iran is among the countries that do not have a national MARC format. The development of an Iranian national MARC format based on UNIMARC, taking into account iranian bibliographic circumstances, is discussed in this article.
